HISTORY
Born at the beginning of sentience, Parallax is a yellow parasitic entity composed of living fear. The entity which feeds on fear treatened to consume the entire universe by infecting fear in every living creature, which would lead to violence and more fear making the entity stronger. Entire civilizations ended up destroying themsevels from paranoia and the terror of Parallax, before the Guardians of the Universe decided that something had to be done.
Forging what would later be known as the Central Power Battery on Oa, the Guardians began gathering willpower from all around the universe. While willpower itself wasn't enough to destroy it's opposing energies of fear, it was enough to put the Parallax into a comatose state. Imprisoning Parallax in the Central Power Battery itself, the Guardians believed they had removed the threat for good.
Parallax's imprisonment caused the rings of the Green Lantern Corps to have a problem with the color yellow, as Parallax's presence in the Battery weakened its power over the corresponding spectrum. Over the following billions of years the Guardians of the Universe would keep the presence of Parallax a secret and it became known only as the yellow impurity, in order to keep anyone from ever tying to free it.
When the Guardians of the Universe later imprisoned the renegade Sinestro in the Battery as well, Parallax was awakened. Using his Qwardian yellow power ring Sinestro was able to communicate with the entity and fueled by Sinestro's hatred for Green Lantern Hal Jordan, Parallax choose Hal as its means of escape.
Influencing Hal through his ring's connection to the Battery, Parallax tried weakening Hal's willpower and making him afraid. Following the destruction of Coast City, Parallax's influence of Hal got a major boost and the entity was able to lure Hal back to Oa, where it sent out a construct resembling Sinestro to fight Hal and gain even more control of him in the process. When Hal killed the Sinestro construct he entered the final stage of his susceptibilty to the entity and Parallax made him enter enter the Central Power Battery and taking all of its power for himself, and thus freeing Parallax. Now free of captivity Parallax grafted itself to Hal Jordan's soul and controlling his actions and thoughts.
As a result Hal changed his name to Parallax and sought to remake the universe during the event known as Zero Hour. Parallax' plans were thwarted by Earth's heroes and after a few encounters with Kyle Rayner, the new Green Lantern of Earth, he left Earth behind. During the event known as Final Night, Hal was able to push back Parallax' influence as he sacrificed his life to save the Earth.
Death, however, would not be the final fate of neither Hal nor Parallax. Hal's infected soul was drawn towards the Spectre Force and became its new host. The Spectre had hoped that by binding with his infected soul it would be able to burn Parallax out as a disease and cast vengeance upon it. Eventually the Spectre was able to seperate Hal's soul from Parallax, but before the Spectre-force was able to do anything it was being recalled as his next host would be needing him.
Now separated of both the Spectre's control and Hal's soul, which was returned to his body and given new life, Parallax took control of the Guardian of the Universe known as Ganthet and fought Hal and the rest of the Green Lantern Corps. Parallax was eventually defeated and its essence returned to the Central Power Battery.
Parallax would eventually be freed once again by the Sinestro Corps.
