HISTORY

Located in Space Sector 674, the world of Bolovax Vik was populated by a highly advanced race. The people of Bolovax Vik joined part of a unified consciousness or uni-mind, known as the "mass mind." The Bolovax need for a unified consciousness was so strong that even after death a uni-mind existed in the afterworld. It is not known if the living and the dead were still linked by the uni-mind. The dead certainly would not return, or they would be hunted by the Xadai.

According to the ancient legends of the planet Bolovax Vik, the Xadai are creatures that guard the souls of the dead. Neither heaven nor hell, the Xadai's realm is an eternity of oneness. Vicious and sadistic, the Xadai do not rest until the dead are one. There is no escape, for even on the material plane the Xadai will retrieve any who dare try to escape the soul pit. - Green Lantern Vol. 3 #166

For centuries, Bolovax Vik had been homeworld for Sector 674's Green Lanterns. When Green Lantern Branwilla died a genetics researcher, Kilowog, was chosen as the new ring wielder. Kilowog honored his homeworld by his efforts in the Corps and became a trainer of many Green Lanterns. Due to the events of the so-called Crisis on Infinite Earths and the actions of the renegade Green Lantern Sinestro of Korugar, Bolovax Vik and virtually its entire population was destroyed. Kilowog, Bolovax Vik's last Green Lantern, was believed to be the world's only survivor. - Green Lantern Corps #201, #218, Green Lantern:Emerald Dawn #1-#4

Some years later, Kilowog was slain in battle by Hal Jordan. Jordan seized the energy of the Central Power Battery for his own and the Green Lantern Corps was no more. Kilowog's remains were left on Oa until that world's later destruction. Green Lantern Vol. 3 #50, #0

Due to the destruction of the Central Power Battery, many Green Lanterns were left without power rings. Some Green Lanterns were able to survive beyond the dissolution of the Green Lantern Corps and those that hunted the former Emerald Warriors. One small group banded together as the Brotherhood of the Cold Flame.

The Brotherhood of the Cold Flame had found one another and pledged an oath, binding together in honor of their fallen comrades and to heal the scars of the past. They traveled from world to world building monument after monument to the dead, but they also sought revenge. Angry by the betrayal of one of their own, the Brotherhood of the Cold Flame tapped the arcane arts of a hundred different worlds. They used Kilowog of Bolovax Vik as their instrument of vengeance. Resurrected as the Dark Lantern, his sole purpose was to eradicate the legacy of Hal Jordan. Events ultimately led to Kilowog becoming self-aware, and when Oa was restored he entered the new Central Power Battery. - Green Lantern: Legacy: The Last Will & Testament of Hal Jordan

The Xadai would not allow anyone to be ripped from the soul pit and started haunting Kilowog's dreams. When that did not work, an emissary appeared before Kilowog on Oa. Though the Xadai was blasted away by Kilowog's Dark Lantern powers, others were still out there. The Xadai next found Kilowog in the company of Ganthet, one of the Guardians of the Universe. They pursued the pair and overpowered them. The Xadai then pulled Kilowog back to the soul pit. - Green Lantern Vol. 3 #165-#166, #168

Ganthet returned to the debris field of Bolovax Vik and used his power to open the portal to the soul pit and allow Kyle Rayner to enter. In their home realm, the Xadai quickly overwhelmed the Green Lantern. They would claim his soul as well; their power had negated the energy of his ring. When Kyle Rayner passed the power ring to Kilowog, the object of the Xadai's hunt was reenergized.

Though the Xadai had to fight Kilowog's Dark Lantern powers and Green Lantern with his power ring, the Xadai's strength was in numbers. They would have overtaken their prey but the pair escaped to the physical plane. Kilowog was restored to his normal self while Ganthet closed the portal to the soul pit. Though defeated, the Xadai vowed to come for Kilowog again. - Green Lantern Vol. 3 #169
