- First appearance of the ongoing character of Swamp Thing, the original "Alex Olsen" from House of Secrets Vol. 1 #92 (June-July 1971): "Swamp Thing" was later revealed as his predecessor
- The title character Swamp Thing believed he was Alec Holland for years before it was revealed he never had been Holland and in fact was a plant elemental as seen in Saga of the Swamp Thing #21 (February 1984): "The Anatomy Lesson."

- While working on a restorative formula that can make forests out of deserts in the Louisiana swamps, scientist Alec Holland is killed by a bomb set off by Mr. E., who wants the formula. Shortly thereafter, a humanoid plant being rises from the swamp--the Swamp Thing!
