HISTORY
A bodiless sentient, the being known only as the Protonic Force existed by inhabiting forms of matter. It could survive outside of matter only for short periods of time. So it was that the Protonic Force came to inhabit a fire ball inside a sentient planet. It continued to grow inside the planet's core, where the sentient planet could not reach it, and periodically sent out powerful forces which threatened to disrupt the planet completely. The Protonic Force did not communicate with the sentient planet and was unconcerned that its power threatened the planet's existence.
After many failed attempts, the sentient planet successfully made contact with the mind of Hal Jordan, Green Lantern of Earth. Rocked by disruptions from the fireball inside itself, the sentient planet explained the threat it faced. Green Lantern descended to the planet's core where he found the pulsating fireball. A flood of water could not put out the fire and the Protonic Force lashed out like a flame thrower. Using his power ring, Green Lantern pulled the fireball out of the planet's core and placed it in permanent orbit around the sentient planet, which had named itself "Green Lantern" as well in honor of its new friend. The fireball cooled, becoming a moon around "Green Lantern," and the real Green Lantern returned to Earth. - Green Lantern Vol. 2 #24
Later arriving at the Coast City Fairgrounds, the Protonic Force inhabited a gigantic papier-mache figure of Green Lantern. Carol Ferris of the Ferris Aircraft Corporation had set up the papier-mache figure as a surprise for the emerald gladiator but the Protonic Force decided to use it to draw its foe to battle. The Protonic Force armed the papier-mache giant with a yellow gem power ring to test Green Lantern's vulnerability to that color. An intense battle ensued in which Green Lantern defeated his giant sized replica.
Green Lantern did not know the Protonic Force was behind the attack and so it was able to escape. It chose to inhabit a clam at the bottom of the Pacific Ocean while it planned its next attack.
Later that day, the Protonic Force returned to the fairgrounds. It inhabited a yellow ribbon cut by Carol Ferris to signal the opening of the Coast City Fair and immediately attacked Green Lantern. The Protonic Force wanted all to see it conquer Green Lantern before it turned its attention on the rest of Earth.
The Protonic Force changed its form to that of a giant yellow topaz power ring. After trapping Green Lantern underneath a yellow dome, the Protonic Force chose to crush the emerald warrior with yellow tentacles reaching from the sides of the dome. The ever resourceful Green Lantern used his power ring to bore a small hole to the center of the Earth. The intense heat from the Earth's core enveloped the yellow topaz, turning it pink. Once it changed color, Green Lantern was able to create a bubble of absolute zero around the topaz, a temperature so low no movement was possible. The Protonic Force was frozen for all eternity. It has not been heard from since. - Green Lantern Vol. 2 #29

GLCWP NOTE
In its first appearance, the yet-to-be-named Protonic Force was merely a fireball with an instinctive ability to defend itself against attack. Five issues later, Gardner Fox wrote the 12 page story "This World is Mine!" which expanded on the story and gave Green Lantern a new, but short-lived, villain.
