CITY INFORMATION
Official Name: Necropolis Litharge
First Appearance: Sandman Vol. 2 #55 (November 1993)
HISTORY
There is more than one Necropolis. The Greek word meaning; "city of the dead" normally describes large and important burial areas, but is also a common name for various aspects of the afterlife. Both Superman and Wonder Woman have visited places called "Necropolis".
Foremost of them all, however, is the Necropolis Litharge; a place called by various names in varied cultures. The citizens are seemingly neither dead nor alive, but both. The Necropolitans can be described as "afterlife morticians" who celebrate the dead, take care of their bodies and guide their spirits to their place. They know countless methods of burial and will take the best care of the corpses assigned to them, be it God or Man. It is not known who charges the Necropolitans with their mission, but it is a mission that needs to be done. Once, there was an earlier Necropolis that failed to fulfill their duties and therefore was destroyed by the Endless.
Recently, the Necropolitan Petrefax left his duties in favor of seeking adventure in other realms.
