HISTORY
Perceiving Kyle Rayner, the last wielder of the power ring, as a potential threat to their plans of universal order, the Controllers placed a mental corruption in his mind. They had planned to use the ring wielder's imagination against him, trapping Rayner in his own mind, in a variety of imaginary situations.
- Green Lantern Vol. 3 #114, Green Lantern Vol. 3 #121 -- 124
In the most elaborate of these corruptions, Rayner saw himself as the leader of a new Green Lantern Corps. Rayner could not remember how he had come to this point in his life as his last memory was being shot by Vlad Giurescu, better known as the Dragon, an assassin who attempted to kill Radu Stancu. - Green Lantern Vol. 3 #120 -- 121
Rayner learned of his "past" from Jade, who claimed to be his wife. According to Jade, they were married in a ceremony officiated by Aquaman and held in the garden at the Coast City memorial. With the help of Alan Scott, Rayner was later able to replicate his ring and restart the Green Lantern Corps on New Oa. It was Rayner himself that handpicked the members of the new Corps which was overseen by Ganthet. The last of the Guardians of the Universe, Ganthet had lost his left eye and bared a scar across the side of his face. As the first of this new Corps, Rayner was known to all as Green Lantern Prime.
The conflict between the Corps and the Controllers was escalating and Ganthet believed the lack of contact from Khar Chota, the insectoid Green Lantern of Space Sector 3427 was somehow related. He summoned Green Lantern Prime to find Khar Chota and ascertain if the Controllers or their agents posed a threat. Rayner was charged with assembling a team to investigate, a team picked by Jade to avoid any suspicions aimed at Rayner due to his memory lapse. Aside from Rayner and Jade, four other Green Lanterns would search for Khar Chota. These were Lenny, Tomar-Bor, Senn Rendle and Shraasha.
A life form so alien that only its own race can pronounce its name, the Green Lantern named "Lenny" was given his more pronounceable name by Green Lantern Prime.
A native of Xudar, Tomar-Bor followed in the tradition of Tomar-Re and Tomar-Tu when he was chosen by Rayner to join the Green Lantern Corps. Rayner had saved Tomar-Bor's life sometime earlier and the young Xudarian considered Rayner his hero.
Senn Rendle was from Durla. Like others of his race, Rendle was a shape shifter. Rendle's tribe was humanoid with purple skin, rather than the more common orange skin for Durlan humanoids.
Shraasha was from an unnamed water planet. Massive and blue-skinned, Shraasha resembled a humanoid whale.
Khar Chota's ring signature was dispersed across the fifth planet of the Aurellian system, a dead world covered by ancient ruins. Rayner split into teams of two, Tomar-Bor was paired with Lenny, Shraasha with Senn Rendle while he and Jade searched the ruins of the dead world.
Rayner and Jade discovered Khar Chota's fragmented ring then the slain Green Lantern's body. Green Lantern Khar Chota had been killed by Effigy, an agent of the Controllers. Effigy led the pair of Green Lanterns into a confrontation with others altered as he had been by the Controllers. - Green Lantern Vol. 3 #121
Over a dozen others possessed the same powers of Effigy. These included members of other alien races such as a being from the late Green Lantern Galius-Zed's species and old enemies to the Corps such as Fatality and a Manhunter. Fatality claimed the Controllers had offered her the opportunity to slaughter Green Lanterns, an offer she gladly accepted.
It appeared Jade and Rayner would be overwhelmed but for the arrival of the four other Green Lanterns. They had only found the ring fragments from Khar Chota and had tracked Green Lantern Prime and Jade to Effigy's lair.
Rayner captured Effigy, as the former Martyn Van Wyck hinted he knew something about the ring wielder's amnesia. Rather than continue the battle with the other Effigies, the Green Lanterns retreated to Oa. - Green Lantern Vol. 3 #121 - 122
Once there, Ganthet was pleased with Green Lantern Prime for delivering Effigy to him for interrogation. Oddly, Ganthet refused Rayner any questions of the Controller's chief agent. Jade tried to convince her husband it was nothing to be concerned about. Rayner thought otherwise and later confronted Effigy alone. Effigy would not give any clear answers but did admit he knew what was going on. He claimed they needed to leave Oa and remove themselves from the influence that surrounded them. They were exiting the building when they were stopped by Ganthet and over a dozen Green Lanterns.
Ganthet accused Rayner of betraying the Corps and though Green Lantern Prime tried to explain Effigy simply attacked. They cut through the emerald warriors and left Oa, only to be pursued. Tomar-Bor would not let the Corps be destroyed by another traitor but he was no match for Rayner. Ganthet tried to turn Rayner back, claiming the Green Lantern's mind was not his own. Still, Rayner pushed on.
Away from Oa and the Green Lantern Corps, Effigy explained everything the Green Lantern had seen was a product of his imagination. The world was as Rayner wanted to see it and was not reality. His subconscious picked Effigy to be the key as Martyn Van Wyck was in some ways a reflection of Kyle Rayner. To escape, all Rayner needed to do was walk through a fiery portal created by Effigy.
Jade appeared to persuade Rayner it was all a trick of Effigy's and he should return to Oa with her. It was all Rayner wanted but Rayner knew it was not the truth. He stepped through the fire and after a few moments of burning pain, awoke in his apartment in New York City. - Green Lantern Vol. 3 #122
After discussing the matter with John Stewart, former Green Lantern and Darkstar, they realized the Controllers were behind what had happened. Rayner would eventually make his way to confront the Controllers and find they did indeed have plans to make a corps of Effigies. Along the way the Controllers attempted to plunge his back into various fantasy worlds to no avail.
The Controllers had created a multitude of Effigies to be their latest weapon. These Effigies were stripped of their will and incapable of independent thought. The Controllers were surprised Rayner had been able to free himself from repeated attempts to unbalance him and eventually withdrew. They would face the Green Lantern again, prepared for his abilities. Rayner warned them they might be dealing with a real Green Lantern Corps in their next encounter. - Green Lantern Vol. 3 #123 - 124

GLCWP NOTE
One of the less developed aspects of the Guardians' emerald energy was the arguable possibility to see into the future. While Kyle's "mental corruption" was revealed to be a fraud, he did later meet a corps of Effigies as "predicted."
