HISTORY
A creature believed to have come from the stars, the so-called "Eye of Osiris" was placed in the capstone of the Great Pyramid of Giza in the days of ancient Egypt, about 2600 BC.
In the early 1940s, occult agents of the Third Reich had discovered the capstone in the subbasement of the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, DC. Two agents, led by a man only known as the "Professor" performed a mystic ritual, believing they had found a doomsday weapon which could serve the Nazi cause. They were wrong, and were killed by the beast they had unleashed.
An air raid siren warned Washington, DC of the menace. Members of the Justice Society, in town to pose for publicity photos at the request of President Franklin Delano Roosevelt, were on hand to fight this latest threat to America.
Some of the greatest heroes of the Golden Age, Hawkman, Hawkgirl, the Atom, Starman, the Flash, Doctor Mid-Nite, Hourman and Green Lantern Alan Scott, were unable to stop the powerful creature. When a bolt from Starman's gravity rod irritated the creature, it turned its eye on them. The heroes were plunged into their greatest fears. Alan Scott saw the Third Reich had conquered the world, and even his Justice Society comrades had turned against him. Scott was forced to fight the dark images of his friends to escape the nightmare and vanquish the Eye of Osiris. All that was left was a charred husk.
When the Soviet army marched on Berlin in 1945, it seized documents describing a Nazi "Doomsday Weapon" that was lost in America. It took decades before KGB agents located the Eye of Osiris and put together a plan to bring it home to the Soviet Union. The Eye was taken onboard a Soviet submarine in the Pacific ocean off the shores of Coast City, California. A jet, being test piloted by Hal Jordan of the Ferris Aircraft Corporation was flying overhead when Jordan decided to investigate. The sub fired a missile at Jordan, destroying his aircraft. The pilot survived, the Soviets did not realize Jordan was Green Lantern.
Cutting his way into the submarine, Jordan interrogated the two man crew and found the old wooden crate the eye was held in. Shining his power beam on it to get a better look, Green Lantern was surprised when the eye absorbed the ring's energy. He was forced to escape with the Soviets while the creature grew. It emerged from the ocean, the size of Coast City's tallest buildings. The Eye of Osiris absorbed the ring's energy constructs and physically fought off the Green Lantern. Jordan was forced to call in his allies in the Justice League of America.
The Eye was absorbing electrical energy from the city when the JLA attacked. When it realized it would have to deal with them directly it attempted to smother them in their darkest fears. Jordan saw the nuclear destruction of Coast City and the death of his JLA teammates. Only by confronting this fear was he able to break out of his personal nightmare and vanquish the Eye of Osiris. The remains fell beneath the waves of the Pacific. The heroes could find no trace of it.
The Eye of Osiris was found years later and brought to an art museum in New York City where it was put on display in the primitive art wing. A man claiming to be its disciple and messenger, but actually seeking attention for himself, claimed it needed the gathered crowd's energy to call it forth.
The Eye really needed the energy from the power ring of Kyle Rayner. Visiting the art museum, Rayner had gone to see what the crowd was looking at when the Eye of Osiris took his ring's energy to increase its size to even greater than before. The Eye of Osiris was now as large as the city and drew upon the energy of Manhattan to feed itself. Even the Justice League in their lunar Watchtower felt the energy drain.
As Green Lantern, Kyle was able to attract the Eye's attention and he was immersed in his fear of failure. Rayner was rescued by Alan Scott, now known as Sentinel. Scott believed that the creature would have to be killed but Rayner realized it had not attacked unless provoked. After Scott was knocked out of the battle by the Eye, Rayner went ahead with his own plan to give the Eye the energy it wanted, even against the advice of Superman, Wonder Woman and the Martian Manhunter.
Once it had the energy it needed, the Eye creature became a creature of radiant energy, about the size of a baseball. It left Earth behind and headed out amongst the stars. It has not been seen since. - Green Lantern: Fear Itself
