OVERVIEW

One of the most technologically advanced planets in the universe, as well as variants in the multiverse, Colu is the native planet of Brainiac (Vril Dox) and his descendants.

HISTORY

Located in Sector 1287, Colu is one of the rim worlds out on the approach to the Magellanic Clouds. The fourth planet from its sun, Colu is also its system's only inhabited world. Featuring a 50-50 mix of land and water, Colu's massive cities contain greater than 99 percent of its population.

Histories vary due to the effects of Crisislevel events. In one accounting, Colu had been under the control of the Computer Tyrants for centuries. The lives of Coluans were shaped from birth to death, with the Tyrants brain-washing the children in edu-blocks. Memories of any other way of life were erased from the minds of Coluan society. The sole exception was a genius even among his fellow Coluans, Vril Dox, better known by his title, Brainiac. Rather than risk his unique intellect, Dox was allowed to have free will, in service of the Computer Tyrants. They went as far as allowing him to have a son, Vril Dox II, who was force grown to adulthood to be an assistant to the elder Dox. -L.E.G.I.O.N. '89 #1

In another retelling of history, Vril Dox had been a menace to Coluan society. Not satisfied with his 12th level intelligence, he used technology to augment his mind and body to gain more power. The Coluans were relieved when Dox, now known as Brainiac, left Colu for the stars.

Fearful of his return, the Coluans created an artificial intelligence to protect themselves. This A.I. network ultimately became the Computer Tyrants of Colu which enslaved them.

The conflicting historical accounts agree Vril Dox II kept his promise to return to his homeworld and overthrow the Tyrants. Aided by his fellow Starlag prisoners whom he had manipulated, Dox was able to destory the Tyrants' main control hub. While this ended their rule, it did not end their threat as the Comupter Tyrants had uploaded themselves to a synthetic-organic body.

During the Rann-Thanagar war, Colu sided with Rann. In one skirmish, the Coluans battled Durla.

In the 31st Century, Colu is represented in the United Planets by Brainiac 6. -Legion of Three Worlds #1

HISTORY: UNIVERSE-247

HISTORY: UNIVERSE-PRIME

The most populated world in known space, in the 31st Century Colu is able to support 16.3 trillion by centuries of miniaturization allowing for more and more room for data storage. A forcefield was set in place to block any threats, earning the world the nickname "the Bottle Planet of Colu." Colu's greatest minds would meet in the Cortex, Colu's central processor.

Despite these safeguards, Colu was devastated when Lemnos used his memory manipulation ability to wipe the intelligence of the Coluan population, rendering them completely helpless as some inhabitants could not remember how to stand, let alone formulate a coherent thought. -Legion of Super-Heroes Vol. 5 #7
