HISTORY

General Avery H. Sunderland was the rogue CEO and owner of the Sunderland Corporation. Wanting to lay his hands on Alec Holland's Bio-Restorative Formula, Sunderland started to hunt the Swamp Thing (IV) to learn its secrets. Setting various agents (like the cyborg Grasp) after the monster, and also allying himself with the government agency called the DDI, Sunderland captured the Swamp Thing and seemingly killed it with a bullet in the head. However, Jason Woodrue, the Floronic Man, had been hired by Sunderland to dissect the Swamp Thing and realised that the creature was not really Alec Holland – but a plant with the memories of Holland. And a plant cannot be killed by a bullet, something that Sunderland became painfully aware of as the Swamp Thing woke up and killed him in rage.

After his death, Sunderland ended up in Hell, where Swamp Thing encountered him during his search for Abby Cable. He was later joined in damnation by his former allies of the DDI.

Much of the Sunderland Corporation fell under the control of the General's British-born cousin Alan Windsor, and later of Windsor's cousin Constance Sunderland.
