The events in this story cover a period of time from J'onn's birth to shortly after him becoming a Manhunter.

Synopsis:

Many years ago, when life on Mars was still pleasant, Sha'sheen J'onzz had a vision that she would bear twins, one of the light and one of the dark. One she names J'onn J'onzz, 'light to the light', and the other Ma'alefa'ak, 'darkness of the heart'. True to her vision, J'onn grew up to be wise and loved, while Ma'alefa'ak became a troublesome loner, though J'onn still loved him.
Some time later, when J'onn had become a manhunter, his brother was summoned before the ruling council of Mars because of his blashphemous experiments. These experiments brought visitors, NEW gods from the planet Apokolips - first Glorious Godfrey and then others, all of whom charmed the people of Mars. Godfrey is particularly interested in J'onn's father M'yrnn, who has been working on 'life equations' in a mixture of philosophy and maths. However, having discovered that M'yrnn would not consider the possibilities of an 'anti-life equation', Godfrey calls in the troops of Apokolips. The martians try to fight back, but the Apokoliptians know all their weaknesses, and when finally driven off are found to have taken the children and ruling council of Mars with them.
Later, Metron visits Mars and J'onn J'onzz vows to travel to Apokolips to find his father and the others; Metron promises that he will find an ally on the planet.
