HISTORY
James Kim's daughter Elizabeth was murdered by Joshua Hayes. While Kim did not attend the trial, he was present at the execution where the killer taunted the distraught father. The rage in Kim's heart attracted the attention of the emotional entity of rage known as the Butcher. The entity latched on to Kim, prompting the intervention of the Spectre.
The Butcher goaded Kim, to fuel the human's rage which in turn fueled the entity. As the Butcher, Kim struck down Hayes and his rage subsided prompting the Butcher to inabit Atrocitus but was instead imprisoned in the Red Lantern power battery. James Kim was then left to face the wrath of the Specte for the murder of Joshua Hayes.
Atrocitus came to Kim's defense, making the Spectre spare Kim as the ghostly being did not understand the emotional component to Kim's actions. The Spectre departed sparing James Kim, but he would judge Atrocitus another day. - Green Lantern Vol. 4 #61
