OVERVIEW

A former slave who became a healer during the Revolutionary War, and a member of Tomahawk's Rangers.

HISTORY

As a slave, a young man saved the life of his master using folk medicines and techniques. His master, a Dr. Randolph, gratefully both trained the young man and freed and offered him his surname.

Hoping to use his skills, he was met with fear and prejudice by those he tried to treat. One day, as the two entered a fort housing Tomahawk and his Rangers, Dr. Randolph suggested that Healer join the group that was in need of a regular medic. He agreed, but Healer insisted that he would not carry a weapon. He was called coward by some, and met again with the same prejudices even among some of Tomahawk's men. After failing to save the life of a new recruit, Horseshoe, he was called upon to save the life of a young Indian boy or all the captured Rangers would be killed by the tribe. Through prayer and superior use of both folk and traditional methods, Healer saved the boy's life and he became a trusted member of the Rangers.

Healer Randolph survived the Revolutionary War, but his further adventures and final fate remain unrecorded.
