HISTORY
Years ago the scientific genius Garrison Slate assembled a celebrated team of scientists and researchers who were feeling underappreciated or underfunded at other companies, and put them to work for him. His new firm, S.T.A.R. Labs (Scientific and Technological Advanced Research Laboratories), became a nationwide, and later international, chain of research laboratories that would not be connected to the federal government but still able to make serious research a cornerstone of its operations.
S.T.A.R. has prospered for decades now, and Slate has intentionally kept a low profile in recent years. On a couple of occasions, though, he has stepped into the limelight again. Some years ago, he discovered that the Chicago branch of S.T.A.R. had became corrupt and subcontracted to one of their biggest rivals, and took personal action to solve the situation. More recently, he stepped in as interim administrator of the superhero firm called the Power Company, when their CEO Josiah Power, a friend of Garrison's, lay in a coma.
