HISTORY

Born on the planet Garon, Onu Murtu was something of an oddity amongst her people: her mind was free.

On her homeworld, newborns were subjected to the cerebro-ray, a device wielded by the Headmen, sinister rulers of Garon. A malfunction in the cerebro-ray spared Onu Murtu from mental slavery by the Headmen. Though she was frightened by being so alone, Onu Murtu realized she must be brave and conceal the fact she was free from the Headmen.

Onu Murtu was assigned to factory work assembling starships for her so-called masters. Late at night, she secretly devised a ray that might be able to cancel the effects of the cerebro-ray but she needed more time to develop it. The Headmen eventually became suspicious of her, forcing her to escape to another world to work in peace on her discovery.

Arriving on Earth, somewhere in California, Onu Murtu quickly adapted to the customs and language of her sanctuary. Taking the name Dorine Clay, she searched for and found a secluded ranch in northern California. Dorine took a detector from her starcraft to warn if the Headmen had followed her to Earth.

The ranch Dorine lived on was owned by Sally and Steve Davis, parents of the late Bill Davis. Before his death, their son Bill Davis, served in the US Air Force. His friend, Hal Jordan, visited the Davises from time-to-time. The Davises felt Hal was like a son to them and they wanted to play match maker to the young singles. Jordan was obviously interested in Dorine but she treated him quite coolly.

Unfortunately for Murtu, the detector she had used to guard her work on Earth warned her of the approach of the Headmen. The nuclear exhaust from their ship had whipped the water of nearby Wasson Lake into a powerful waterspout. Jordan, as Green Lantern used his ring to stop the waterspout. He used the same ring to probe Dorine Clay's mind and discover her true identity of Onu Murtu and her connection to the incident on Wasson Lake.

The Headmen of Garon sought to gain the upper hand by cloaking their ship from sight but the ring of Green Lantern made it visible again. The rulers of Garon attempted to convince Green Lantern that Clay had stolen one of their ships and sought only to gain power for herself. Clay didn't need to convince the ring wielder of the Headmen's malicious intent as a sniper attempted to eliminate the Green Lantern. Their weapons were soon destroyed by the might of the power ring. The Headmen were sent back to Garon with the warning their days were numbered.

Though Green Lantern offered to return to Garon with Onu and overthrow the Headmen, she declined the noble offer. Murtu wanted to restore the pride of her people by using the antidote to the cerebro-ray, and with their aid reclaim what was once theirs. She planned to set out for Garon immediately as the Headmen would not expect her to arrive so soon after their encounter. Before she left, Murtu gave the ring wielder a letter for Hal Jordan. Signing it as Dorine, she told Jordan he had won her heart but she must go away. - Green Lantern Vol. 2 #36

Returning to Garon, Clay was able to undue the cerebro-ray's effects on nearly one hundred people but her work was not to be completed. The Headmen easily put down the rebellion of the "Freeminds."

Years after she left Earth, Murtu witnessed the capture of Green Lantern during his exile in space. The Headmen were able to control his power ring by combining their will power. They planned to use the ring wielder's demise as an example of their worthiness to join the Citadel Empire.

Onu Murtu and her fellow Freeminds used the release of Green Lantern as an opportunity to strike back at their oppressors but the Headmen's weapons were designed to be ineffective against their masters. Once more Green Lantern was captured. He and Dorine were sentenced to die at dawn. Their last hours were to be used however they wished. - Green Lantern Vol. 2 #160

She was shocked to discover the firing squad was composed of her own people, forced by the Headmen to execute the two of them. Their lives were spared by the timely intervention of the Omega Men. - Green Lantern Vol. 2 #160 - 161

Their new found allies had witnessed the Headmen's appeal to the Citadel and had come to rescue Green Lantern, who had helped them months earlier. The heroes broke into two teams to rescue the captive Freeminds. Before they split apart, Dorine told Green Lantern she loved him.

Dorine's team found the Freeminds at the mercy of the Headmen. They would be executed unless Dorine and the Omega Men surrendered. The years of enslavement weighed too heavily on her, despite the possible loss of the hostages, Dorine led the Omega Men against the Headmen. Some of the Freeminds died in the ensuing fight but the Omega Men were ultimately victorious.

Once more joining up with Green Lantern and the rest of the Omega Men, the heroes were surprised to discover the Headmen wanted to leave Garon as soon as possible. The dread menace of the Vegan Star System, the cold Psions, were to arrive soon. The Omega Men spirited Clay, Green Lantern, and the Freeminds off Garon before the Headmen's fate was sealed. Dorine could now look forward to what she thought would be the perfect life, freedom and the love of Hal Jordan. - Green Lantern Vol. 2 #161

With the Green Lantern's help, the Freeminds built a new home for themselves on Aoran, the homeworld of Evil Star. One of Green Lantern's most formidable enemies, Evil Star had killed every living person on his homeworld over a century before.

Unfortunately, the life a Green Lantern was a dangerous one and another of Jordan's enemies had escaped the Guardians of the Universe to avenge himself on the Green Lantern. Taking the guise of a computer malfunction on board Green Lantern's Starcruiser, the wizard Myrwhydden killed a young boy, Ph'rax and planned to do the same to the ring wielder and Clay. - Green Lantern Vol. 2 #162

With his Power Battery sucked out the ship's airlock, a powerless Green Lantern left the ship to cross the deadly vacuum. Moments from death, Green Lantern was able to recharge his power ring and return both Dorine and himself to the surface of Aoran.

Jordan was pulled into the power ring by the evil mage and became part of a "sword and sorcery" fantasy world created by Myrwhydden, in which Green Lantern was called Haljor the Barbarian, wielder of the Powersword. Once Jordan realized it was only a dream world, Myrwhydden was easily defeated. - Green Lantern Vol. 2 #164

Though she wanted Green Lantern to stay on Aoran with her, Dorine slowly came to realize she would lose him. She accompanied Jordan on board his starcruiser from which the Green Lantern undertook missions for the Guardians of the Universe. Dorine became increasingly frustrated as Jordan only had thoughts of serving the Green Lantern Corps and returning to Earth.

Their final recorded adventure took place on an unnamed desert world. The Guardians had assigned Hal to visit a world stricken with a disease called the Somnolence, where they discovered an alien scientist known as the Caretaker was trying in vain to revive his people, even at the expense of Green Lantern's life. The Caretaker died, shortly after Green Lantern freed himself, never knowing his people were not lost in sleep. The Somnolence had taken their lives years ago. - Green Lantern Vol. 2 #171

Green Lantern went to Oa to face the Guardians shortly thereafter. His exile ended, Hal Jordan returned to Earth. Dorine Clay's current activities have yet to be revealed. - Green Lantern Vol. 2 #172
