OVERVIEW

An electric beacon used by the Gotham City Police Department in order to project a bat symbol onto the night sky and thereby summon Batman.

HISTORY

For years, the Gotham City police department would summon Batman through the use of an electric beacon atop the Gotham Central police station. The beacon projects a powerful beam of light into the night sky with a bat-shaped area masked (similar to a theatrical logo) in order to resemble a bat flying across the Gotham skyline. Recently, however, following a Gotham gang war in which Batman's actions ran counter to the police department, the signal was dismantled. It has since been rebuilt.
