OVERVIEW

Apophis is an evil Egyptian snake god and the eternal enemy of the sun god Ra.

HISTORY

Apophis is the Greek name for Apep, the evil snake god who in Egyptian mythology tries to kill the sun god Ra every night when the sun god travels through the underworld. Ra is protected by cats, subjects of the cat goddess Bast, who repeatedly slay Apophis night after night. It is said that every cat in the world at one time has stood eye to eye with Apophis, and that no cat has ever lost the battle. Losing would mean the end of the world, so the cats perform an important duty in Egyptian mythology. In spite of this, Apophis is resurrected every night, waiting below the Ished-tree for another chance at devouring the sun and casting the world into eternal darkness.

Apophis is considered to be the father of all snakes in the world, a claim that seems unlikely today.

POWERS AND WEAPONS

The full extent of the powers of Apophis are unknown, but he probably possesses enhanced snake abilities such as venomous bite, speed and dexterity. He has a huge body, his full length probably measuring 160 feet or more. He seems to be immortal, since he is resurrected eery night to once again try to devour Ra.
