Originally aspiring to be an actor, Alfred Pennyworth became Bruce Wayne's loyal friend and protector after the child's parents were gunned down in front of him. He later aided Bruce in his quest for justice and revenge, becoming his most trusted ally when Bruce became the Batman. He frequently despairs at Bruce/Batman's habit of pushing away those closest to him, but has remained loyal to him, to the extent of aiding his master's escape when he was recently imprisoned for a murder he did not commit. His thespian skills have frequently served Batman well, but his most important role is as Bruce's friend.
