HISTORY
A cop from Chicago, Sarah Essen had an affair with colleague James Gordon, which resulted in his moving to Gotham City. She followed him there, but things didn't work out and she drifted out of his life. In recent years, she returned to Gotham City, rekindling her romance with Gordon and eventually marrying him. For a time she was promoted to Police Commissioner, as the pawn of the various political factions in the city.
When Gotham was cut off from the rest of the United States, James and Sarah both decided to stay to help keep some kind of order. They were remarkably successful, but on New Year's Eve, just as Gotham re-entered the world at large, Sarah was shot and killed by the Joker, a loss which James has never quite recovered from.
